Key Planning Concepts adopted by the Committee

This page contains a list of key planning concepts adopted by the RWSPC. It also includes definitions of key terms and data used in the planning process.

  • Sustainable water supplies (adopted Nov 21, 2008): RWSPC will use sustainability in its framework for regional water supply planning and management.

In general, sustainable development is development that "... meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." [from Bruntland (1987)]
For water resources, sustainability means to provide adequate supplies of water to meet demand in a manner that can be maintained for an indefinite time without causing unacceptable environmental, economic, or social costs. This definition of sustainabilty was written by Alley et al. (1999).
